Cataract blindness is very common among poor people living in rural areas. There are no ophthalmologists in the rural areas and because of this reason coupled with poverty several thousands of poor people are remaining blind because of unoperated cataracts. To help such people to become active people in the society we have designed community outreach program where we, at Sankurathri Foundation, take the eye care to the door steps of the needy and poor in rural and remote areas.
Under this program we medical team visits a place and conducts free eye examinations to all the people attend those screening camps. All minor ailments are provided with treatment there at the camp site. If anyone requires cataract surgery we advise them and if they are willing we perform all the preoperative testing to verify their suitability for cataract surgery. If they are suitable we advise them to opt for cataract surgery and if the patient is willing we provide the transportation to them the same day to come to base hospital for surgery. At the base hospital we provide all the preoperative testing, food, accommodation, medicines during surgery, Intraocular lens, post operative medications and transportation back to their village free of cost to the patient. In addition, we also provide transportation to the two postoperative visits to all the patients.
With your donation we could restore eye sight to Mrs. Geddada Atchiyamma, 65 year old living with her husband in a village Kumarapuram. Her husband Surya Rao is heart patient and unable to work. They have two daughters and one son. As he is not earning they are dependent on their son. As she was blind in both the eyes due to cataracts she found it was difficult for her to manage her own needs. Under such conditions she became a burden to her son’s family and very depressed. Her son is a farm laborer and couldn’t afford to pay for her cataract surgery. Because of her economic condition we have performed Cataract surgery free of cost to her. Now she can see better with your help and happy to be able to do her chores and also ready to help her son’s family at home. You are instrumental in restoring her dignity and self confidence.
Thank you Mark and Lynn for making a difference in Atchiyamma’s life
