Ashok is happy and healthy

Six year old Giruthuri Ashok Kumar is studying in grade 1 in Sarada Vidyalayam, the free school run by Sankurathri Foundation in rural Andhra Pradesh. He is the second child in the family. His father, Sathibabu, sells potted plants in a nursery and earns about 3 $ a day whenever he finds work. His monthly income is barely enough to make ends meet.

Children of Ashok’s age and background are normally not encouraged to go to school, but her parents realize that education may be the only chance he has to escape the vicious cycle of poverty, and so they encourage him in every way they can. However, because of poverty and ignorance, Ashok does not get a balanced diet at home, and is undernourished. This results in him not being able to concentrate in class, and falling prey to frequent illnesses. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Ashok is a happy boy and the teachers have confidence in his talents and his potentials.

Your donation, Howard, James, Katherine, Luke and Ani, Michael, Sarah H, Sarah R (x2), Dean and Julie, Tom, Thomas, and Gillian, would ensure that Ashok will be provided with a wholesome and nutritious lunch at school every day. The food would be cooked with iodized salt, and will give him sufficient nutrients for the entire day. He will also get a glass of milk in the evening.
