Six years old Koppula Sravani is the eldest child in the family. They live in the village of Penumarthy, located on the outskirts of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Her father, Satyanarayana, works as a mason in the construction of small houses, earning about 4$ a day whenever he finds work. His earnings are barely able to support his family’s basic necessities.
Sarvanis’ community does not believe in educating their children. Girls her age are either put to work as child laborers, or kept at home to mind younger siblings. It is because of the dedicated effort of Sankurathri Foundation, that her family has agreed to allow Sarvani to go to school. She is currently enrolled in Grade 1 at Sarada Vidyalayam, the school run by Sankurathri Foundation, and every day that she stays in school takes her one step closer to being able to chart a prosperous future for herself.
Thank you, Bellevue Rotary, for giving Sravani the opportunity of a stable future.
