Appayamma can see better with your help!

Paleti Appayamma, 65y, F
Dear Jennifer,

Sixty-five year old, Appayamma lives with her husband in the village of Pourupaka, in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Her husband works as a farm laborer and earns up to $80, in a lucky month. That hardly suffices to meet their basic needs and medical expenses.

Though Appayamma does not work and earn, she manages the entire household and keeps herself busy. But lately, she had noticed that her vision had become extremely blurry and she was finding it difficult to do any work.

Her husband escorted her to the nearby clinic run by Sankurathri Foundation and after a complete eye-examination, it was found that she needed corrective glasses to see clearly. With no income of her own, Appayamma could not afford to buy one and knew her husband had no savings either.

Your generous donation, Jennifer, enabled Sankurathri Foundation to provide her a pair of glasses with which she can see clearly now and is very happy.

Thank you so much, for this gift!

Ever-smiling Veeramma!

Anasuri Veeramma, F, 70y
Dear Elizabeth,

Seventy year old, Veeramma, is an old widow living with her son, in the village of Vemulavada, in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Her son, who is a mason working in a Construction Company barely earns about $5 a day, which does not suffice to meet the most basic needs of his family.

Veeramma, who was quite independent herself, helped around the house with the chores and could also take care of her needs. A year back, she developed a cataract problem in both her eyes, rendering her almost blind.

Under such circumstances, she could not do her basic chores nor help around the house. She knew she would become a burden on her son’s family, if this continued but did not know what to do about it. Her condition depressed her a lot and she finally decided to confide in her son and ask him to accompany her, to the nearest hospital.

She knew this would involve medical and traveling expenses but had no choice, but to depend on her son. After a complete eye-examination, she was informed about her cataract with needed to be operated soon, for her vision to be restored. She confessed to the Doctors at Sankurathri, that she did not have any savings and could not burden her son further, as she knew he was in no position to pay for her surgery.

Your generous donation, Elizabeth, enabled Sankurathri Foundation to bear the cost of Veeramma’s cataract surgery and also cover the cost of her transportation and two post-surgery visits to the Doctor.

Thanks to your support, she can now see clearly and is very happy to be of help in the house. Your timely help not only bailed her out financially but also helped restore her dignity and self-confidence.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for helping Veeramma, restore her vision and enjoy the remaining years of her life!

Kada Govindu, 65, M
Dear Benjamin,

Kada Govindu is a 75 year old farm laborer who lives in the village of Vulapalli, and earns about $ 90 per month. The sum is barely enough to meet the needs of him and his wife. With that money he and his wife are living in the village Vulapalli.  They have 2 daughters and 1 son, all of whom live far away from the village.

Kada Govindu has been suffering from cataract blindness for the last 18 months. His problem was identified at an eye camp that Sankurathri Foundation conducted in his area. Since Govindu was willing to arrange for his own transportation, he was brought back to the base hospital on the same day where he was provided all the preoperative testing, food, accommodation, medicines during surgery. After the Intraocular transplant, he was given post operative medications and transportation back to his village.

Your donation, Benjamin, has not only covered the entire cost of Govindu’s surgery, it will cover the cost of two follow up visits to the hospital, and will take care of the cost of prescription glasses if required.

Thank you, Benjamin, for bringing light back into Govindu’s life.
