Koppisetty saved from child labor

Koppisetti Chinnari
Dear Harini,

Seven year-old Koppisetty is the second child of Musalaiah, a farm laborer. They live in the village of Kothuru, which is located in the outskirts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. Koppisetty is in the second grade at Sarada Vidyalayam, a school run by the Sankurathri Foundation. Her father earns around $2 per day, but because he doesn’t have work every day, his income is not assured. Hence, he struggles to support his family.

Under such circumstances, education is never a priority. Many boys and girls in rural areas such as this become child laborers to help supplement the family’s income. Unfortunately, this leads many to drop out of school. Sarada Vidyalayam is helping such children complete their education without any financial burden to their parents. The school provides not only free education, but also provides free books, uniforms, school bags, a pair of sandals, transportation, nutritious lunch, milk, medical check ups, and medicine to all the children. The school maintains a very strict curriculum, provides quality education and imparts good discipline and values to groom them as good citizens.

With your assistance, Harini, the Sankurathri Foundation is providing Koppisetty with a quality education and saving her from child labor.

Setti is very happy because of your help

Setti Chandra Kantham
Rao and Adam,

Cataract blindness is very common among poor people living in rural areas in India. There are no ophthalmologists in these regions and widespread poverty ensures they remain blind due to untreated cataracts. To help such people become active in society, Sankurathri designed a community outreach program in which they take eye care to the door steps of the needy and poor in rural and remote areas.

Under this program, their medical team visits a place and conducts free eye examinations for all the people there. All minor ailments are treated there at the camp site. If anyone requires cataract surgery, Sankurathri representatives advise them and perform all preoperative testing to verify their suitability for cataract surgery. Willing participants are sent transportation to the hospital the same day.

Setti has two sons and she has been living with her son’s family ever since she became a widow thirteen years ago. As she has been a house wife for a long time, she could never go out and earn a living, though she has been helping her son’s family at home. Unfortunately, for the last year she couldn’t work at home because of her poor eye sight. Her son escorted her to Sankurathri’s free eye camp where she received cataract surgery free of cost.

Thank you both for your kindness. Setti is ecstatic to have her vision restored.
